Today, the Goldener Adler is run by brothers Bernd and Axel Maier. They took over the restaurant from their parents in 2001. As head chef, Bernd is responsible for all the delicious dishes that leave the kitchen for the tables, he also handles technical matters, repairs, and property maintenance.
Axel is a sommelier and, as such, is responsible for stocking the wine cellar. He leads the restaurant service team and oversees the restaurant’s strategic development.
Bernd’s wife, Hannelore, welcomes you at breakfast and, in addition to a smile, always has a unique suggestion for an outing, she also oversees housekeeping.
Axel’s wife, Sandra, is often the very first point of contact for our guests: She handles reservations and all the organizational details related to running the hotel. Her “Swiss German” dialect has confused quite a few callers, leading them to think they dialed the wrong number…
Hannelore and Bernd’s children, Johanna and Patrick, as well as Andri, Vitus, and Seraina—Sandra and Axel’s children—round out the team.
And when Andrea, the daughter of the family, comes “home” to visit with her husband and children once again, the “Maier gang” is complete.
The history of the Adler dates back to 1395, when it was already referred to as the “Wirtshaus zu Oberried.” Since no specific name for the inn was us it can be assumed that it was the only inn in Oberried at that time.
In the decades that followed, the Adler changed hands several times.
In 1864, the “Goldener Adler” was auctioned off. It went to Karl Jautz of the “Ochsen” for 26,000 guilders.
In 1883, the Goldener Adler went up for auction once again, and Heitzmann, the innkeeper from Hinterzarten, became its owner.
In 1893, Anton Jautz bought the Adler from the innkeeper of the Rössle in Hinterzarten and, together with his wife Rosa Albrecht, restored the inn to its former glory.
Their son Alfred, one of seven children, took over the family business and continued to run it with his wife, Klara Rombach, from Kirchzarten. Like his father Anton, Alfred had learned the trades of baking and hospitality, he was an honest man and, together with his wife, brought the business widespread acclaim.
Today, the name Maier-Jautz is associated with the Black Forest inn “Zum Goldenen Adler.”
On July 1, 2001, the “Goldener Adler” underwent another generational transition, following the one in 1968.
Bernd and Axel Maier took over the historic inn from their parents, Alfons and Maria Maier-Jautz.
